Christ Cathedral & Truth Center Mission Team
Gulf Shore Region Love Relief Mission Trip
October 31 – November 4, 2005
The Year 2005 has been one of the worst years recorded for hurricanes in the United States. Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana have experienced the most severe damage during this hurricane season. Hurricane Katrina and Rita have changed lives of people in the Gulf Coast forever.
Bishop Porter, Senior Pastor of Christ Cathedral received the vision and mandate from God to give support to the people of the Gulf Shore Region, specifically on the Mississippi coast. Christ Cathedral established the Gulf Shore Region Love Relief Project, which included financial donations, clothing and non-perishable food items, linen, toys, baby needs, and much more.
On Monday, October 31, 2005, the mission team led by Bishop Porter arrived in the Gulf Coast Region in Mississippi to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi were the assigned areas. The first stop was in Biloxi, MS, home of the world-renowned, Beau Rivage Casino and Resort. The city, which once revered for its beaches and casinos, was now the scene of horrific disaster. The city was now full of destroyed businesses, churches and homes with tents and trailers in the driveway.
The Mission Team set-up on the corner of Division and Raynor Street, one the hardest hit and underserved areas, according to Biloxians. Word traveled quickly that more assistance had arrived and Biloxians came from all over the city. They were extremely thankful and grateful, that their fellow Americans had not forgotten their plight. Even with all they endured, they had a sincere concern about their neighbors in Gulfport, especially the historic Turkey Creek Community, Mississippi’s oldest African-American Community dating back to early 1800s.
Turkey Creek experienced floodwaters of 12-15 feet, according to a resident and local pastor. Many of the Turkey Creek residents were older and had evacuated, however the damage and devastation could not go unnoticed. The mission team traveled throughout the city of Gulfport serving the Turn Key Community, L.C. Jones Homes, Alabama Street and Joy Nelson Drive.
The need for more assistance is enormous; therefore, the Gulf Shore Region Love Relief Mission Team will be returning December 14-17, 2005. The goal for this trip is to provide as many blankets, coats, shoes, and toys, cleaning supplies, clothes, water and non-perishable food as possible. This unprecedented natural disaster is calling for an unprecedented response to this region.
Your assistance and support is greatly desired. The Gulf Shore Region Love Relief drop-off is located at Christ Cathedral Family Life Center, 2400 Murchison Road, Fayetteville, North Carolina 28302, between 8:00 AM- 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday.
